Lawrence city commissioners consider a city sales tax referendum on the April ballot to raise about 399,648 for 26 police and 15 fire personnel. The plan would extend firemen hours and add a police patrol district while offsetting existing budgets. other funding options were rejected.
Thousands of patrolmen joined a three day work action over pay while essential services remained. Some 75 percent of the 25 000 patrolmen signed in but avoided normal duties as Mayor Lindsay and Police Commissioner Murphy warned of limited operations and scheduled court hearings.
Grand jury testimony publicized in Marin County ties Angela Davis to a teenager who smuggled four guns into Judge Harold Haley's courtroom during an Aug. 7 escape attempt that left four dead. Witnesses describe a van, purchases of a shotgun, an M1 carbine, and 200 rounds, and identify a woman resembling Davis.
Nancy Mangabeira Unger, a 22 year old former New York pupil, describes physical and psychological torture after being captive among 70 prisoners moved to Chile as ransom for Brazil’s kidnapped Swiss ambassador. She alleges police threats and subversive activity interrogations amid delays in consular visits.
Swiss Ambassador Giovanni Enrico Bucher returned to Switzerland homeward with aid from Prime Minister William Roch after 40 days in captivity by Brazilian terrorists. The relief followed Brazil's exchange yielding 70 prisoners to Chile. Bucher thanked the government and mourned guard Helio de Araujo who died in the incident.
