American officer Lapham led 2006 guerrillas in Philippines
Captain Robert Lapham, a Davenport Iowa native, led a multi-year resistance against Japanese forces in the Philippines. From 1942 MacArthur ordered him to organize guerrillas, growing from 20 men to a larger force, with Filipino allies supplying guns and manpower. He recounted close calls, including a 1943 dawn ambush in Nuevo Ecija, and noted his greatest worry was American-made shoes. He described fighting at Clark Field and Fort Stotsenburg, the difficulty of scarce firearms, and promoting ranks to match battlefield realities.
