Japanese attack planes and dive bombers hammer Luzon front lines as ground fighting persists along the line. The war department reports Japanese shock troops probing for infiltration and notes reports to General MacArthur indicate systematic looting and devastation of the Philippine countryside.
A Rome radio reports Japanese fleet in action off the Batan peninsula as Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s forces hold a heroic line. A night landing was reportedly carried out with success along the coast behind American lines. A war department bulletin says Japanese shock troops with special training press aggressive infiltration along the line while attack planes and dive bombers harass MacArthur’s positions.
Washington reports the tanker Coimbra allied vessel was torpedoed about 100 miles east of New York. CPI Price Administrator Leon Henderson announced the opening of OPA regional offices in Cleveland Kansas City and Dallas. L. D. Nicholson will head the Kansas City office with Jerome Walsh as regional attorney Walsh a former Missouri legislator is Kansas City native and chairs the Missouri Bar civil liberties committee.
Conservation at Haskell Institute aims to curb tire use with students and staff cooperating in careful car and truck use. W. D. Evans of the vocational department leads the program.
Haskell Institute will run a six day week starting tomorrow with all day classes on Saturday Sept. The plan aims to aid defense efforts and reduce operating costs. Indian students were briefed and showed enthusiasm. Savings of about $20 000 over the term will fund more hogs gardens and food preservation. Commencement shifts to April 27 though the term length remains, with Saturday work folded into weekly schedule.

Twenty four officials from six Kansas cities urged a special legislative session to help meet war financing needs. A six member committee was named to approach Gov. Payne Ratner about scheduling action. The group cited conflicts with budget and cash basis laws and sought funds without new taxes.
