The $462 billion holiday total topped 2007’s peak but inflating prices and population growth distort the picture. The government ends its 182 billion rescue of American International Group by selling stock over two years. AIG pays 21 billion to the New York Fed and converts Treasury preferred stock into over 1.6 billion common shares, lifting government ownership to 92 percent. Treasury will start selling shares in March.
Friday's market summary shows the Dow Industrials up 11,787.38 points, the Nasdaq at 2,755.30, and the S&P 500 at 1,293.24 after a 9.48-point gain. Treasury 30-year yields sit at 4.53 percent. Commodities include corn at 6.49 dollars, soybeans at 14.23, wheat at 8.60, and oil at 91.54 per barrel.
Detroit experts predict better auto lending will lift U S car and light truck sales to about 12.8 million in 2011, up from 11.6 million in 2010. Younger buyers 18 to 35, previously shut out, may gain from easier credit as lenders loosen underwriting after the recession.
