Letter to Enron warned of troubles
An Enron employee warned Chairman Kenneth Lay last August that the company could implode in a wave of accounting scandals unless it halted tactics that later led to bankruptcy. Republican lawmakers released excerpts from the letter and demand records of a review, noting the employee’s concerns about hiding losses and off balance sheet debt. Lay was to testify before Congress on February 4 after Vinson & Elkins concluded no further investigation was warranted.

Dead Sea area sinks further as groundwater drops
A new study shows the Dead Sea region on the Israeli Jordanian border subsided up to 2.5 inches per year from 1992 to 1999 as the water table fell. Groundwater removal for agriculture and other uses lowered the water level about 20 feet in a decade, risking sinkholes and hotel stability along the shoreline.
