The Associated Press ranking shows Kansas 18 0 atop the poll with 46 first place votes and 1549 points, Oklahoma and Missouri rising to third and fourth as the Big Eight places strength in the Top 25. Purdue debuts in the rankings after wins over Minnesota and Indiana.
Kansas State, now 9-7 and 1-1 in the Big Eight, struggled as CU guards Reggie Morton and Stevie Wise led a 40-11 backcourt edge. Steve Henson and Jean Derouillere were held to poor shooting, with Derouillere shut out on 10 tries. Kruger called it not one of their better performances as Colorado snapped five-year skid against KSU.
Topeka High faces Lawrence in the Topeka Invitational first round with the Lions relying on pace and pressure. Troy Arrington and Michael Blackwell lead Trojan offense while Tony Arrington anchors the post. Tipoff 6 p.m. at Highland Park as rivalries and bracket play unfold through the week.
Paul Pilkington, a Roy Utah junior high English teacher, won the Houston-Tenneco Marathon in 2:11:13 earning 29000 dollars. Allan Zachariasen, Denmark, finished second and Martin Gruening West Germany third while Kenya's Sam Ngatia placed fourth. In the women’s race Maria Trujillo of Scottsdale Arizona led from start to finish defeating West Germany’s Krestin Pressler with a 2:32:55 win.
