Allied air forces bombed Sousse and Sfax in eastern Tunisia leaving harbor areas aflame. B-26 Marauders hit rail lines at Mahares while fighters patrolled the front. Reports say ground action unchanged as RAF and US aircraft strike supply routes and ports along the Tunisian coast.
The War Labor Board summoned President John L. Lewis and United Mine Workers officials along with striking miners and operators to explain the cessation. The stoppage, the worst since Pearl Harbor for man hours lost, has halted 500 000 tons of anthracite and tests the nation during wartime. The board will not decide merits until miners return to work.

New York January 15. The Berlin radio broadcast to German troops on the Stalingrad front urged blind obedience and duty, claiming Soviet attacks were repelled by German valor. The OWI noted the program included no familiar music, focusing on admonitions to soldiers facing encirclement.

Lawrence reports Col. Carroll Riggs missing in action in Australia on December 18, 1942. A former ROTC staff member at the University of Kansas, he served in coast artillery. A staff member called him one of the finest in the service and said the news was a blow to all.
The average of 60 stocks rose to 42.6 points, reversing yesterday's drop to 42.2 points as traders monitored gains across major sectors.
The Massachusetts city recreation committee resigned en masse citing lack of funds as the WPA program ends January 25. Members Burgert Russell Eustace Stough Woestemeyer Stapleton absent. Stapleton to replace Martin who moved to Topeka. Mayor Russell notes future depends on the city council.
Ray Ogden reports a Federal Works Agency notice approving a 26000.27 grant for Eudora grade school to help cover rising costs. The district has exhausted funds and teachers have not been paid since November 30, 1942.
Lawrence residents will be asked to save tin cans for war uses. The city street committee began plans for a citywide collection to be trucked to Kansas City for shredding. Nearby Atchison St Joseph and Leavenworth already supply cans to the depot. Handlers prefer cans in original shape not mashed.
United Nations Week drive launches tonight at Granada and Jayhawker theaters led by Rev. C. E. Allison, with ninth grade Girl Scouts Troop 15 collecting funds. Catherina Fruin, a KU student from Holland and scout troop leader, will address audiences from stage.
Soviet dispatches report the Red Army pushing back German forces along the Don front toward Rostov while capturing several towns and killing many in 24 hours. Advances include a 26 mile push to recapture Sotnikovskoye and a wedge widening toward Rostov Batu.
Topeka reports a shift to much colder, wetter weather with rain and snow forecast for Kansas tonight and tomorrow. Rain will switch to snow in the west with eastward movement, while forecasters note no break in unusually warm temperatures across the state. Wichita Kansas January 15 James J Newman vice president of the B F Goodrich Co told business agricultural and industrial leaders that tractors could run through 1943 on rubber He cited existing tire inventories and the use of worn tires of slightly different sizes as key factors He noted synthetic rubber for tractor tires is a proven capability and could be extended to farms when production shifts allow It would match natural rubber tires and the nation must maintain rubber conservation amid uncertain synthetic schedules
A local selective service office received a call for 33 men to leave at 7 am on February 1 by chartered bus after breakfast at a government expense cafe. The men will be assigned to land or naval forces, not yet divided by branch. President Roosevelt allows preference, and the board will visit Topeka next Monday seeking guidance on younger 18 and 19 year olds and other issues. John Riling accompanies the board, with a roster to be issued next Monday or Tuesday.
Allied ground troops reported killing 116 Japanese in a surprise attack near Salamua New Guinea as MacArthur’s headquarters said a Japanese force was wiped out in the Mubo area. Air forces bombed Salamaua Lae Madang Finschhafen and expanded targets to Gasmata New Britain and Timor.
U S troops in New Guinea report Sergeant Harold Pointer of Bozeman Montana using big game hunting skills as a counter sniper on Sanananda point. In under two weeks he had 19 Japanese credited to him mostly in solo forays. Pointer stalks through jungle and mud to spot snipers then closes to fire. He tracks movements by sound and can guide mortar and machine gun fire on stronger positions.
Mrs Arthur W Davidson of 9 Winona Street suffered minor burns to her arm and leg when she fell trying to control a grass fire near her home this morning. Fire department extinguished the blaze and no damage to property was reported.
Landlord Mrs. Cochran agrees to restore services at 1142 Indiana Street after a federal court hearing on a temporary injunction. Judge Hopkins postponed ruling. a permanent injunction hearing will be set later. Howard A. Jones and tenants cited rent ceiling violations linked to fumigant candles and service cuts amid a labor-area housing strain.
Kansas State college in Manhattan moves up second semester with classes shortened to two days on January 26 and 27. First classes of the term begin January 28 under the new timetable.

Major Charles Calvin Sheridan 24 of Emporia Kansas is missing in action over western Europe. He is the highest ranking army air force officer from Emporia and serves as an army air squadron commander. His parents Mr and Mrs George Sheridan were notified by the war department that he has been missing since January 3.
University of Kansas launches a room search for a large incoming cohort of women in aeronautical trainee programs. Four aircraft firms will recruit on campus, with program start set for next week. Trainees earn salaries during the 16 week course and may gain university credit.
Senator Reed says a special senate committee will hear from city representatives at Kansas City Monday regarding Midwest fuel shortages. Clerks at the Douglas county war price and rationing office in the Community building issued rationing Book No 1 today. About 50 books were distributed as the deadline passed for obtaining the original books. Book No 2 will be issued in February for rationing some 300 food items.
