Reports describe fallen churches, damaged bridges, and displaced residents, while Maine lawmakers grapple with elections, unseating members, and fusionist maneuvers in a tense state scene.
Reports from January 14 describe petitions by women for political disabilities relief and a constitutional amendment granting women the vote. Debates cover bold bills on treasury note tender, bank reserves in gold and silver, and commissions to probe liquor traffic. Other items note pensions increases, a delays on antiquities import, and Ireland relief plans.
A chaotic dispatch notes General Treavinu with hundreds of Mexican troops pushing north from Chihuahua. In Florida Mountains a prospector party was surprised by about thirty Indians. Que killed, two wounded, stock captured. Fifty five Indians seen near McEwen’s ridge heading toward Black Range with Major Marrow in hot pursuit. Governor of Chihuahua reports about one hundred Indians and families have gone north after depredations. Also reports on Maine bribery probe, Chicago stock yards, New York electors bill, Kinsley arson attempt, prison death, Medill marriage, Grant banquet in Havana, and St Louis Kansas & Arizona railroad officers elected in Ossawatomie.
The State Board of Charitable Institutions met in this city yesterday and, after conferences with Governor St. John Mayor Case and Judge Carey, received deeds for the Kansas State Reform School site in Shawnee county. The land described includes Northwest fractional quarter and three acres of the northeast quarter of section 18 in township 11 south range 16 east, totaling more than 160 acres, duly conveyed to the State. The Board will review drawings and estimates at the next regular meeting and aims to push construction, with contracts to be let so work can begin early in the spring. Vices note: the visit to the Insane Asylum occurred and routine business was transacted.
Col J H Rice editor of the Paola Republican attended in the city to drum up support for the Western National Pair to be held at Bismarck Grove near Lawrence in September 1880. The Kansas fair aims to showcase local agriculture with large premiums for displays and livestock. Neosho County is urged to participate to prove its status as an agricultural district, with farmers named as potential active supporters.
A Rochester, New York woman reports in Utica Herald that her father, once said to be incurably ill, is getting well after using Hop Bitters. Her daughters declare the improvement remarkable and express gratitude for the remedy.
Sheriff Henry B. Asher of Douglas County announces a local election day on February old date in Lawrence Kansas. Voters in Wakarusa Eudora Palmyra Willow Springs Marion Clinton Ranwaka Lecompton and Grate townships will elect clerks treasurers two justices of the peace constables and road overseers. Polls open from 6 AM to 6 PM at usual township polling places. Date appears as January 10 1800s era text.
