General Treavinu drives Mexican troops northward in frontier clash

Reform School Site Designated by State Board Meeting

The State Board of Charitable Institutions met in this city yesterday and, after conferences with Governor St. John Mayor Case and Judge Carey, received deeds for the Kansas State Reform School site in Shawnee county. The land described includes Northwest fractional quarter and three acres of the northeast quarter of section 18 in township 11 south range 16 east, totaling more than 160 acres, duly conveyed to the State. The Board will review drawings and estimates at the next regular meeting and aims to push construction, with contracts to be let so work can begin early in the spring. Vices note: the visit to the Insane Asylum occurred and routine business was transacted.

Western National Pair Promises Kansas Fair in 1880

Col J H Rice editor of the Paola Republican attended in the city to drum up support for the Western National Pair to be held at Bismarck Grove near Lawrence in September 1880. The Kansas fair aims to showcase local agriculture with large premiums for displays and livestock. Neosho County is urged to participate to prove its status as an agricultural district, with farmers named as potential active supporters.

Sheriff Henry B. Asher of Douglas County announces a local election day on February old date in Lawrence Kansas. Voters in Wakarusa Eudora Palmyra Willow Springs Marion Clinton Ranwaka Lecompton and Grate townships will elect clerks treasurers two justices of the peace constables and road overseers. Polls open from 6 AM to 6 PM at usual township polling places. Date appears as January 10 1800s era text.
