Washington, Jan 14 AP A flood of speeches flooded the Senate as it debated the Philippine independence measure to block a vote on Hoover veto. Senators from both parties pressed for independence while others urged sustaining the veto, with House passage already overriding the veto.
Washington January 14 AP Democratic leaders prepared a drastic cloture petition to end Senator Long’s filibuster against the Glass banking bill. The move stalled when the bank measure was set aside for Philippine independence debate. VP Curtis assured Glass the bill would stay on the calendar as leaders claimed 30 Democratic votes and 16 signatories for the petition, with fate dependent on Republican support.
Washington Jan 34 AP Senator Harrison urged immediate action on a bill to let the Reconstruction Corporation loan mortgaged home or farm owners enough to pay taxes for two years. Loans require mortgagees to refrain from foreclosures for two years. Washington Jan 14 AP Early House action on bankruptcy revision promised as Speaker Garner noted potential advantages and creditor debtor asset valuation agreement with court cooperation expected.
Winter has imposed a two day truce on armies in north China with only minor Jehol border skirmishes reported, described as imaginary by Japanese sources. Manchuria reports heavy reinforcements for Chinese command and Tsai Ting Kai proposes attacking the Japanese 19th Route Army. Japanese forces that captured Chinmenkow Pass reportedly withdrew to Chinchow, Manchuria, leaving a small garrison.
Washington AP reports the school built in the Virginia mountains by President Hoover will continue under state supervision in the Dark Hollow tract of the Rapidan camp. Secretary Lawrence Richey noted Christene West, the trained teacher, will likely remain teaching the mountaineers as plans proceed toward Shenandoah National Park inclusion.
New York reports that the larger commercial banks in the country saw a modest drop in deposits for the year despite banking scares. Fifty-seven percent of total deposits came from 195 banks, declining about 311.76 million dollars or one percent, while all banks lost over twenty percent. The 42 leading banks with liabilities above 100 million dollars fell by 114.56 million, with many banks posting gains despite the year’s turmoil.
The Jetmore municipal power plant in Dodge City Kansas was destroyed by a fire this afternoon after an explosion whose cause is undetermined. Insurance partly covers the loss. Also noted is a mention of a new Ford V-8 from Hamilton's Ady.

Kansas Attorney General Roland Boynton urged creation of a unified state inspection department to oversee all agency inspections and also investigate crimes and identify criminals. He said it would replace multiple inspector groups and, without added cost, modernize criminal investigations while current local police lack funds and authority to combat organized crime.

Kansas City reports Ray B. Staley of Rapid City is favored by the Haskell Indian Institute alumni board for superintendent, replacing Dr. Baldwin who resigned to join West Virginia University. The group will notify U S Representative Guyer and Indian education officials in Washington. Staley has prior roles at Haskell Fort Sill and Rapid City. County officers investigate a garage fire at Eudora reported by neighbors as extinguished early yesterday. Deputy Sheriff C F Richards says kerosene-soaked rags were found nearby, with Sheriff Jack Dunkley continuing the inquiry into the blaze.
Topeka June meeting of the state board of regents reviewed plans to present to the legislature the case for repairing KU's Dyche Museum building, closed for structural defects. The board estimated a $50,000 repair cost. Regents legislative committee members include Leslie Wallace, F. W. Harris, Ralie Warrener, and Ralph T. O'Neil.
At Fifth and Indiana streets around 2 PM a two-car crash left seven people involved. Miss Myrtle Grover drove a Ford roadster with Mrs. Frank Wenstemaker and Donald Wenstemaker. all escaped injury though the car was badly damaged. A Chevrolet coach driven by Mrs. Sam Dark of Lecompton with her children Clayton Le Roy and Mary and sister Mrs. Harl Toer sustained front-end damage. Grover’s car traveled south on Indiana, Dark’s car east on Fifth. both vehicles collided.
Samuel Varisco, 32, Republican committeeman of the 27th ward, held on first degree murder charges after the fatal shooting of Angelo Porello, 25, in a revolver battle sparked by a pool game dispute. The Porello family, long known in Cleveland for the corn sugar racket, has suffered multiple killings in the past four years.
The League of Women Voters heard a committee report on relief conditions in Lawrence and Douglas County. The study found poor record keeping, high duplication, and calls for a centralized plan with trained case workers to reduce waste and improve relief outcomes amid about 600 families aided last year.
Mrs. Rudolph Hammer, 45, of Eudora, is in Memorial hospital in serious condition from wounds Sheriff Jack Dunkley describes as self inflicted. She had earlier been a patient at the state hospital in Topeka and was on parole. She used her husband’s razor to cut her throat and abdomen, was taken to hospital yesterday afternoon and reported slightly improved this morning.
The Kansas forecast calls for fair and warmer conditions tonight and Sunday. Morning conditions are clear except for partly cloudy skies at Ottawa. Dirt and road conditions indicate good travel in Douglas County with roads listed as good.
Washington Jan 14 AP Leading house Democrats plan a steering committee to set and direct party legislative policies in the next congress aiming for a harmonious, closely knit majority. Burns McDuffie and Rainey back the plan as a feature of speakership campaigns. Republicans have long used a steering committee to align members.
Judge Means struck down the Taylor summons as illegal, citing his Missouri residency and prior confinement in the Douglas county jail. Taylor remains imprisoned for assault with intent to commit manslaughter in Christenson shooting, with appeals and separate assault charges against his wife and child pending, bonds set at $6,000 and $7,500 respectively.
A seven person family lost their home when a frame house at Seventh and California streets burned completely this afternoon. The Holliday property, occupied by Mr and Mrs LeRoy Miller and their five children, suffered about $80 in damages. Fire Chief Paul Ingels said the house was beyond saving when the fire crew arrived. The cause was undetermined as the structure was destroyed. Nearby fires included a grass fire at 319 Illinois street and a cross fire at 720 Arkansas extinguished earlier today.
The Fraternal Aid Union board of directors will meet in Lawrence tomorrow and Monday. Attending out of town representatives include John Hasselberger of New York City John C Tolson Baltimore national vice president William C Hart ray Chicago Lon A Smith Austin Martin Miller Fort Scott and F M Pearl Hiawatha. Senator Lewis forecast in Washington that Reconstruction Corporation loans to railroads would not be repaid and government ownership would follow.
The Douglas county federal relief committee's project meeting at the Ellis club approved expenditures for street and cemetery work and storm sewer repairs. A quarry study and drainage ditch project were named, along with street widening on Massachusetts Seventh and Eleventh. New projects include Woodland Park cleanup and an auditorium community building plan. The group aims to maximize labor use with minimal materials to use the extra 7,100 dollars for unemployment relief.
County Treasurer L. E. Hoover reports the first half tax distribution is about 44 percent, matching 1931, with checks mailed to taxing units covering the percent of the first half payment. Fewer citizens pay the full year on the due date, and last year’s full-period collection was about 90 percent, a pattern likely to repeat. Prof. J Robert Ransom survivor of a highway crash near Midland that killed three colored persons was discharged from Lawrence Memorial hospital Friday and was taken to Kansas City Kansas by ambulance. Ransom is registrar of Western University. President J P Hing and two women were among the dead in the accident.
