Artist Flees After Refusing Police Orders In North Lawrence
A man driving a Ford roadstep north near the Seventh street crossing in North Lawrence ignored Chief Will Johns and Officer Henry Smith and fled after two stores were passed worthless checks. A bullet from Johns’ gun hit the car but the suspect escaped west off the highway. Police, pursuing toward Reno, found no trace of the car or man. The checks were used at Dunnamk Grocery and Royal Shoe Store on Massachusetts Street. The grocery proprietor, Dunmire, said it was the first bad check in 30 years. The suspect paid about 1.4 dollars in groceries with a check drawn on a Tonganooxe bank signed J. L. Martin, then left without the groceries. The Tonganooxe Bank reported no account for J. L. Martin.
