American and Filipino artillery repelled a 24 hour Japanese attack on Batan peninsula near Manila bay. Eleven Japanese batteries were silenced while Allied losses were slight. Dive bombers supported the attack but caused no major fortification damage.
Organized automobile dealers told a House committee that government curbs on auto production and freezing sales amount to a death sentence for their business unless relief is provided. Ray Chamberlain of the National Automobile Dealers Association testified as hundreds of dealers and about 100 members of Congress attended the hearing led by Chairman Patman.
A Chamber of Commerce meeting discussed financing and building an alfalfa and cereal grass dehydrator south of the Kaw river with a $50,000 capital need. Clyde Hosford was authorized to sell stock for a company to operate the plant, with possible funds from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. W. H. Allison, linked to Cerophyl Laboratories at Midland, is available to operate the plant.
Topeka January 13 Dr F C Beelman secretary of the Kansas Board of Health said approval has been given to a state program rehabilitating selectees rejected for military duty for physical reasons. The work has covered lung ailments and venereal diseases and is portable to public health authorities. Beelman said Kansas is pioneering and other states have requested information on the program.
Allied air and naval actions reported off Tarakan in Borneo with Dutch bombers hitting a Japanese invasion armada. British dispatches hint at a major announcement that may shift the Malayan situation in Britain's favor as Allied reinforcements move toward the Far East battlefront.
Washington reports President Roosevelt calling the price control bill flawed with farm price ceiling amendments. He warned a veto only if objectionable features remain, and urged limits on spiraling costs impacting farmers, war effort, and future generations. Topeka notes appointment of Elizabeth Haughey and others to the state board of regents for four-year terms.
City officials announce 1942 bicycle license tags will arrive between January 15 and 20 and be sold for 25 cents at the police station. City clerk Bill Stone says every bicycle owner must buy a tag. delays were blamed on defense needs. The new tags resemble auto tags in form.
Fifty University of Kansas students began physical examinations at the student hospital for the civilian aviation primary flying course. About thirty will be selected for training. Later thirty candidates for the secondary course will undergo tests. twenty will be chosen. Flight training starts in about two weeks.
The Great Lakes naval training station basketball squad will face the University of Kansas at Municipal Auditorium on February 5 in a benefit for the naval relief fund. The team features Big Ten and Big Six stars including John Lobsiger and William Menske. Kansas coach F C Allen will seek Big Six officials through Reaves Peters.
Dr. Lyle S. Powell announced a Lawrence unit of the Civil Air Patrol as part of a state wing. The national civilian semi military group will include men and women, with flying officer enlistments open to pilots and many non flying posts for volunteers. Wing commander is Howard Wilcox of Anthony Kansas. Private planes will be used in CAP operations.
Harrisburg reports 25 of Pennsylvania's 100 daily newspapers raised subscription rates in the past year due to higher operating costs. William N. Hardy of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers association cites increased wire service costs payrolls and taxes as the main factors.
British dispatches claim the key rail city of Orel 200 miles south of Moscow is back in Soviet hands as German forces face a pincer from the south. Reports also note Stalin’s troops advancing toward Vyazma and Kharkov, with Mussolini reinforcing Italy for a potential Malta assault.
Washington Jan 13 UP Donald M Nelson director of the OPM priority division told the mayors of 250 leading American cities it would be impossible to prosecute the war successfully and still lead normal lives at home He urged eliminating waste at home and evaluating all activities by the sole yardstick of war winning or public health and safety La Guardia urged a quick answer on what can be cut and Nelson promised a city handbook after meetings with a mayors committee.
Kansas farms held unusually large grain reserves on January 1, totaling 123,007,000 bushels of wheat, corn, and oats. Wheat stood at 64,133,000 bushels, corn at 38,839,000, and oats at 20,035,000. These levels exceed any year since 1933, with wheat and corn amounts reflecting 37 and 73 percent of last year’s production respectively.

Renewed R A F attacks on Japan occupied airdromes near Rangoon and a new Japanese raid on the north Rangoon airfield were reported. Bangkok quoted a Japanese embassy spokesman predicting Singapore would fall within two months. Singapore reported heavy air bombing with limited damage. A daylight raid near an northeast coast town killed six. British forces withdrew in western Malaya. Italian ships requisitioned, a convoy torpedoed, and an Italian minesweeper sunk in the Mediterranean.

Fort Hays State college in Hays Kansas announces new defense oriented courses in physics mathematics chemistry home economics and health to train experts in specialized arts and crafts. New physical courses include applied meteorology and practical radio.
At the Eldridge hotel luncheon, Brewster outlined eastern Kansas industrial prospects. He highlighted sorghum and soybeans as raw materials for alcohol, plastics from soybean meal, salt electrolysis, and the role of cheap electric energy in attracting plants.
Lawrence post office to receive 5 000 federal automobile stamps for sale. Each stamp costs 2 09 and covers motorists to July 1, after which a 5.00 stamp will cover the next year. Federal stamps required after February 1, with staff reallocation planned to handle demand. About 9 300 vehicles in the county, stamps to be distributed countywide.
The stock market index for 60 stocks stands at 38.3. The previous day reading was 37.8, indicating a gain.
President Roosevelt selected Wendell L. Willkie as an umpire to assist the new 12 man war labor board. Willkie discussed the post with President Roosevelt. his acceptance is not definite. The board plans a panel system with an umpire in major cases and will announce final machinery later.
A new two hour Safety engineering course in the ESMDT program will start tonight at 1 o'clock in room 1038 Liberty Memorial High School. Director Guy V Keeler of the KU ESMDT program and Anthony J Basile of the Lawrence Paper Company will teach. Enrollment is open to high school graduates or equivalent shop experience at no charge, with first meeting January 13.

War demand could reduce double-breasted men's suits to conserve wool. Eliminating the front overlap in all annually manufactured suits would free enough fabric to produce about 500000 additional single breasted suits.
The Lawrence city council approved claims totaling 228 604.98, largely to retire water department bonds. The sinking fund, boosted by early maturity bond sales and bond issuances, reduced external debt while reallocating assets within the water department. The overall water debt remains 123 550.00 with final bonds due in 1947 and 1948.
War department announced the death of Pvt. Naan Nesmith 33 Glendale Calif brother of Dean Nesmith University of Kansas athletic trainer killed in action at Corregidor Philippines January 6. He had been in the Philippines since last April with a coast artillery unit on the island fortress. Survived by five brothers Paul Pomona Gene Chester Veryl Belleville Kan Glen Emporia Ole New York City and one sister Mrs Vera Dressler Topeka.
Handbills on how to drive in a blackout are at local filling stations and in city schools. The high school auto mechanics department led by E J Logsden and the print shop supervised by Ralph Graber coordinated the distribution. Logsden used rules from the American Automobile Association.
