Tax proposal blocks gas price drop in Washington
A writer argues against a small 10 to 20 cent gas tax hike and urges a $1 levy redirected to Social Security cuts. He notes oil at $48 and pump prices around $2.20, estimating a $12 weekly tax impact per driver to be offset by a $12 wage deduction, preserving consumer buying power.

Gas tax shift to cut work disincentives and curb oil use
Charles Krauthammer argues a $1 per gallon gas tax, revenue neutral via FICA rebates, would reduce driving and encourage fuel efficient cars, lower oil demand, and cut pollution. He notes it replaces costly regulations, preserves U.S. economic gains, and criticizes dependence on oil-rich nations.

Ground broken for first real apartment house in Lawrence
John Constant broke ground this morning at 1201 Oread avenue for Lawrence s first real apartment house. The 100 by sixty foot tract will hold eight two story units with compact 19 by 23 footprint. Each unit includes living dining and sleeping areas plus a small kitchen and bath with a wall bed feature to minimize furniture. The design aims at families of two and reflects Eastern layouts. The project is highlighted in the Lawrence Daily Journal World history series compiled by Sarah St John Readmore.
