Giffords Breathing On Her Own In Recovery Update

Rep Gabrielle Giffords shows progress in recovery from a head wound after a shooting. Doctors say she is breathing on her own for the first time and moving both arms while remaining in critical condition at University Medical Center in Tucson. The attack killed six and wounded fourteen.

State of the Union Address Set for January 25

President Barack Obama will deliver the State of the Union speech to a joint session of Congress on January 25, marking his first address to the full House under a divided government. House Speaker Boehner invited him. the White House accepted. The speech will outline annual policy goals and priorities, with focus on economy and national debt.

19 killed in rifle and machete attacks in Nigeria villages

Armed assailants struck three central Nigerian villages, killing 19 people and injuring at least three. In Kuru Station near Jos, homes were burned and residents forced out as attackers used rifles and machetes. Local official Simon Mwaekwom described the scene as terrible.

City study to form task force on trash system changes

Lawrence commissioners will form a task force to study automated trash trucks and a new billing scheme that charges heavier fees to households generating more waste. Some officials also consider private bids for trash service. A formal proposal will be reviewed Feb. 8, with page 6A for details.
