Applicant seeks one Kansas Centennial Medal from a local bank in Kansas. About 20 000 medals exist and a drawing will occur on January 90 1961 to allot medals. a $2.50 payment is due on delivery, with the bank having paid the Kansas Centennial Commission for each medal. Deadline is January 26 1961.
Havana reports a drop in predicted Yankee invasion fears and notes plans to build 20,000 government homes for workers. Castro aides address Friday’s march to the presidential palace while sugar harvest lag and militia calls shift labor toward defense and production.
Kansas University police report three thefts on campus. A foot mat worth £12 was taken from J R Pearson Hall Tuesday night. Carol Newland, a Kansas City freshman, had $22 stolen from her purse Monday after a note misled her to Watson Library. Phillip Ballard, a Wichita junior, reported a wrist watch stolen December 18 from a stone wall between the Kansas Union and Phi Beta Phi.
A meeting at 8 p.m. Monday at Linwood's Mackey School will feature Ted Gray, Linwood school superintendent, discussing annexation of non high school territory. Leavenworth County's D E Bach tel will show a film on the Kansas educational survey presented during his discussion.
Carl A. Gibson, former manager of Miller Jones Shoe Store and Seattle resident since the 1950s, died December 21 in Seattle of a heart attack. Burial was in Burlingame, California. He is survived by his wife Nina and two sons and a daughter. Stella Tulk, 64, of 638 III, died December 24 at Kansas University Medical Center. She is survived by widower Arthur Tulk of the home and two nieces, Peggy Hain and Gloria Holdsworth. Burial was December 27 in Horton.
Douglas County Mental Health Association board backed state legislation for the supervision of community health centers. Speakers at the Bert Nash Clinic included Ray Briman and Marion Craney of Topeka, Lela Myers, and W. C. Boardman, representing KAMH and health boards.
Bill Hough longtime Lawrence Paper Co sales staff moves to Houston Texas to become sales manager for Weyerhaeuser Company container division. He served in the 5th Infantry in Europe earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart and holds degrees from KU including a masters in economics. He, his wife and their four year old son Chip depart Lawrence this weekend and he remains active in civic groups and church.
Local officials note unemployment is highest in areas outside construction with only a few persons affected here and there. Employers have made small cutbacks during the adjustment period while stenographers, typists, and waitresses remain in demand. Douglas County’s economy stays firmer than most, though fears of change linger as buyers delay large purchases.
LaDona Hylton two years old underwent a Wednesday Topeka operation to remove a hair barrette lodged in her throat. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Hylton and is reported to be getting along fine today.
Wakarusa Watershed officials will attend a Topeka meeting Friday in the State Office Building to defend the 928 633 acre project before the governors watershed review committee. The committee will decide watershed standings and start dates for construction amid a 72 point rating. The Wakarusa covers Wabaunsee Shawnee Osage and Douglas counties with most acreage in Douglas.
Governor candidate Anderson proposes a spring 1962 grant-in-aid program for junior colleges at $3 per credit hour for in-district students, a three-member full-time parole board, a diagnostic center to separate convicts by security level, and feasibility review of Norton facilities for hospital use. He backs expanded urban planning, revised forestry commission size, and state aid with management controls for Wichita and Washburn Universities. He calls for an expanded Kansas Industrial Development Commission budget and a Department of Urban Planning to aid federal funding matches. He emphasizes efficient services, eliminating waste, and financing future needs, plus long-range water policy and storage priority through the Water Resources Board.
The stockholders officers and directors of the First National Bank of Lawrence held their annual meetings on Wednesday afternoon. Warren Rhodes announced Joseph Kelly was promoted to assistant vice president, with re-elections for Rhodes, Martin, Flanders, Graves, and Von Gunten. Directors listed include Barber, Brinkman, Kemper Jr, Kirchhoff, Kraft, Martin, Rhodes, and Winter. The Dec 31 1960 resources totaled $11,281,033.78.
Former congressman Newell George of Kansas City Kansas states he is interested in the federal district attorney job. He met with Robert Kennedy in December and said an opening is expected after January 20. George, a Democrat, was defeated for re election by Republican Robert Ellsworth.
Police Court cases show multiple defendants with fines from 5 to 110 dollars for speeding improper muffler failure to yield and no driver's license with additional counts of expired license and prohibited turn. Several civil filings include joint or separate divorce style petitions among Bailey Fish Miller Spencer Hatfield Smith Findley Landon Simmons.

Several couples at various addresses announce the birth of a son or daughter, with dates indicated as Wednesday or today.

A small dog crossing the K-10 overpass caused a two car accident east of the city limits. Damage estimated at 200 dollars. Drivers were Mary Katherine Lynch 36 Route 5 and Bernice Cora Mitchell 50 Route 2. Both vehicles were traveling east. Mitchell rear ended Lynch after Lynch slowed for the dog. No injuries reported.

A 225 pound four point buck was killed Wednesday night when struck by a car driven by Ken Koerner of 750 North Third Street west of Midland at Buck Creek Station on U S 24. State game protector Eddie Bond said the deer will be dressed and the meat given to a state institution. Koerner was uninjured but his car was badly damaged. It was the first deer killed in the area this year. Several were killed in 1960.
