Amelia Earhart lands in Oakland after a solo 2408 mile Pacific flight from Honolulu in 18 hours 16 minutes. About 5,000 crowd the field as police struggle to hold back supporters while flowers are given to the aviatrix and her plane is moved to the hangar. She says she is tired and notes remaining fuel could have lasted longer.
Paola Kansas reports two Wise sisters dying within hours of each other in the same family. Ellen Wise Sheridan 81 and Mollie Wise Sheridan 66 passed after illness spanning years and days. Mrs Sheridan widow of veteran publisher B J Sheridan marked 59 years of marriage last November with funeral plans set for next day.
Oklahoma City fans call the inaugural ahead with Governor-elect Marland planned in formal dress next Monday. In Hutchinson Kansas four men Babe Pyles Hart Pyles Lacey Cunningham and Monk Richardson were questioned as suspects in the December 23 robbery and torture at a Stafford county farm that left August Reiter and Otto Reiter wounded and led to the seizure of $24000 in bonds. Riley of Lewis Kansas provided the confession naming the shooting and planning, while authorities hunted for the men and kept others under guard.
In Topeka on January 12 AP reports a prosecutor filed 22 additional witnesses for the second trial of Maj. Charles A. Shepard, accused of poisoning his wife. A list of 43 subpoenas and a defense list of 28 witnesses, spanning from Washington to Los Angeles, are on record as the case proceeds.
The weather bureau forecast a return to seasonable weather with a cold wave and possible snow in Kansas tonight through Sunday. Temperatures were expected to fall to 5 to 10 degrees above zero by Sunday night, with eastern counties milder tonight. Readings tomorrow may stay near 30 as the northwest cold move advances from Havre and western Canada.
Albuquerque January 12 Jack Frye president of Transcontinental and Western Air forced down alone in a snow storm near Navajo Arizona while flying westward. He established radio contact with the airport but a relief party could not sight his stranded plane on its first attempt. Frye said he was unhurt but the ship was damaged and he spent the night in the plane. Temperatures about 20 degrees above zero.
Six car barn employees of the Kaw Valley and Western Railway walked out at Homer Springs Bonner Springs Kansas complaining pay schedules were indefinite. The road is in receivership with G Q Claflin as receiver. They said the last pay received was for late April 1934. The walkout should not interfere with interurban service.
A suit filed in Oklahoma City seeks foreclosure of mortgages totaling 2 795 218 and appointment of a receiver for certain properties. Defendants include Wirt Franklin, prominent oil man, and several others. Advertisement notes classify ads line.
New York reports a man resembling Bruno Hauptmann, Robert Scanlon of Menlo Park New Jersey, will testify for the defense. Scanlon, a former real estate man, says he was in woods near the Lindbergh estate at the abduction time and drove roads around the Hopewell estate. He notes seeing episodes described by residents near Sourland and decided to testify after reading trial coverage.
Otis McMahon, a Kansas State College veterinary student, seeks an injunction against compulsory military training claiming religious objections and discrimination. Judge Hungete ruled no constitutional barrier to compulsory training, allowing expulsion for noncompliance. Attorney Rooney plans appeal. state officials and veterans’ leaders defended the policy.
AP dispatch reports the executive council approved personal bonds for incoming state officers including Ed T Powers of Salina, a Democrat, with Powers bond set at 26,000 signed by six businessmen who each pledged liabilities double their signatory amounts. Other officials required bonds range from 6,000 to 400,000 with no governor bond required. Governor Landon noted opposition to personal bonds but the act complied with statute.
In Logan Indiana on January 12 AP reports thirty Missouri Valley residents faced Justice J. M. Davis. Each received 30 day sentences for railroad yard thefts but the judge suspended them. Mrs. C F Gross cried that the jail had been robbed as deputies lined up the defendants and recovered knives forks apples and towels from pockets and under garments.
Defense in Hauptmann trial concentrates on handwriting to dispute the ransom notes. Attorneys claim Isador Fisch wrote or collected the notes and argue Fisch is the source of the funds. Prosecution counters, noting dissimilar handwriting and ties to the ransom money. The trial, likely four more weeks, continues with specialists examining wood, ladders, and witness accounts.
Topeka January 12 AP fees and taxes collected from insurance companies licensed in Kansas totaled 892,490 in 1934. Of the total, 770,640 went to the state general fund 19,750 to the school fund 31,100 to the state fire marshal’s department and 71,000 to the firemen’s relief fund. The relief fund portion will be distributed among firemen and the State Firemen’s Association.
Ten of Ft. Hays State College football starters from the Central Intercollegiate Conference champions moved to fullback in high school. The lone exception was Cocky Sexton, a star quarterback.
Washington January 12 AP Senators discuss legislative plans to avert a gold clause ruling that could ruin the New Deal. Some want to enlarge the Supreme Court by two or three justices to ensure the administration and Congress can push the cheap dollar program. Senator Dekla noted confidence in a favorable court decision.
Reports from Chicago say Lynn Waldorf regarded as certain to succeed Dick Hanley at Northwestern with Bert Ingwersen as line coach and Jack Vance as backfield coach. Waldorf, currently at Kansas State, would be assisted by Ingwersen, while Ossie Solem’s retirement opens the Northwestern job.
C. Taylor of Allene was re elected president of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture at the 64th convention in Topeka Kansas. Officers chosen included Lt. C. Beezley vice president May D. Josserand treasurer and J C Moh ler secretary. Taylor succeeds W Carlton of Cofferville. The board finished its organization after Chester Thivix administrator outlined a one point program for the future of wheat farming.
