Kansas City and Chicago report wheat and corn futures with May and July contracts showing modest gains. Price lists include No 2 hard and No 3 red wheats, corn and oats quotes, alongside live stock receipts and cattle hogs values in regional markets.
In Topeka on Jan 12 Charles Curtis of the First district secured the U S Senate nomination after a fourth ballot swing. Campbell’s withdrawal and last minute switches from Campbell and other anti Curtis votes created a rapid cascade to Curtis with cheers and some hisses as the tally neared completion. The nomination was then declared unanimous by Victor Murdock’s representative and others.
Mrs Mary H L Ford spoke on Ibsen the Norwegian dramatist at University Hall last night. The talk covered Peer Gynt and Brand with clear appreciation of dramatic incidents and inner significance. A movement exists among university people to secure Ford for another lecture.
Mrs Frances Keefer died at 9 this morning at the home of her daughter Mrs M Newmark after a long illness. Born in Peekskill New York in 1812 she lived in Kansas since 1875 and leaves five children including B F Keefer J F Keefer and two daughters Mrs W B McGill and Mrs Josephine Crane. Funeral Monday at 10 30 am at Mrs Newmark’s home.
The Rebekah lodge held an installation of officers last night. Evelyn Conger was named G A, Minnie Pressagh treasurer, Lena Urieb warden, Olive Brockelshy conductor, Maude Hunter R S to NG, Bert Wiggins L S to NG, Chas Ziesenis RS to VG, Gertrude Hay L S VG, Florence Hay 1G, Nellie Sanders OVG, Florence Tweed chaplain. Refreshments, dancing and cards followed the ceremony.
Lawrence residents reported strong support for Curtis at the Topeka caucus as ballots showed Curtis ahead from the first count. Jim Ransom surprised by voting for Stubbs, then Benson ally Ransom shifted to balance the exchange. Benson and the Ottawa faction were upbeat with the outcome.
The old South Lawrence weather witch Dick the peacock died Tuesday afternoon. He was likely the oldest bird in the state at about 25 years, raised at Franklin by Geo. Y. Johnson. He knew weather patterns, roosted high when fairweather came, drew children to his feathers, and would beg for kitchen crumbs. He is remembered fondly by locals, including the Haskell children.
The Arcade Proper and Son take charge of the Arcade restaurant on Bridge street in North Lawrence and promise first class operation. They invite patronage from the public.

Word arrived last evening that M W E Johnson Navajo missionary scheduled to speak at the boys meeting at the Association building cannot arrive for tomorrow. A basketball game is set for tonight at the Association building between the K U and Y M C A teams with Haskell guests in attendance.

In Police Court Fred Hurst also known as Fred Lewis and Fred Miller was arraigned for stealing a plane from John Austin. He sold the aircraft to Chas Schulz and pleaded not guilty with trial set for 3 o clock this afternoon.
The funeral for J N Florer will be held Monday at 2 p m at the Congregational church. The funeral for Jim Johnson will be from Warren Street Baptist church at 2 p m tomorrow.
