Bikes for kids brighten KU game halftimes in community surprise
Lawrence Boys & Girls Club and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County donated about 36 bicycles to receive at KU basketball halftimes. Ten club members were picked for December 20 against Lafayette, and BBBS volunteers received bikes at December 14 against Arkansas State and January 4 against UNLV. Winners and a parent attended the games, feeling celebrated and empowered by the gesture.

Courtney Bibb left New York City in October for a six month cycle trek across the country costing about 14000 dollars. He plans 20 stops from New York to Los Angeles to volunteer at local charities and raise volunteer awareness. His Lawrence stop included remarks about challenges and spreading goodwill.

Utility work on Edgelea Road in Lawrence NY
City utility crews install a new water main along Edgelea Road from E 19th Street to Harper Street with no parking and daily closures 7 a.m. to 5 30 p.m. through January 30. A separate water line project at 10th and Kentucky intersection is open but may intermittently close streets until February. A diamond interchange project at Kansas Highway 10 and Bob Billings Parkway 15th Street operates in daylight hours weekdays, with detours on the South Lawrence Trafficway trail between Sixth Street and Bob Billings Parkway.

Fire damages Baldwin City home endangering two residents
A Saturday afternoon blaze at 216 Fifth St in Baldwin City forced two men from the residence. Fire crews arrived at 12:59 PM and containment limited to the rear deck and kitchen. No injuries were reported. The Red Cross provided aid while the Kansas State Fire Marshal investigates the cause.

City Eyes NEA Grant to Grow Free State Festival
