Kansas approves prison expansion plan for 550 new beds
Kansas Department of Corrections outlined a multiphase expansion to add 550 beds over the next year and 1,410 beds over a decade at a total cost of about 16 million dollars. The plan includes 200 bed Norton Unit, 150 bed El Dorado housing, and Hutchinson unit renovations slated to open by spring 1999, with ongoing annual costs. Topeka road blocks bid to name highway for Nancy Kassebaum Baker
Former senator Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker opposes a proposal to name a Topeka stretch of highway the Nancy Landon Kassebaum Expressway. The plan, pushed by Sonny Scroggins and endorsed by Shawnee County, would link I 70 to US 24 and pass through Oakland Expressway. Baker says she dislikes naming roads for people and prefers no public honors.
