Footnotes to Faith top religious news story of 1962

Religion editors named the second Vatican Council the top story of 1962 with ten other major items. The list includes the New York state prayer ruling, Albany Georgia clergy demonstrations, Lutheran mergers and talks toward church unity, church burnings tied to civil rights, Karl Barth’s U.S. visit, and divisions over the virgin birth doctrine. A Philadelphia presbytery rejected federal funds for a hospital expansion while urging its churches to fund the project. Max Lerner’s Dec 1 Saturday Review essay warned four clues to civilizational decline: rigidity, overreaching, failure of nerve, and failure of self knowledge.
