Syble Lee Davis, 44, of Lawrence, will have graveside services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oak Hill Cemetery. She died Monday, January 3, 2011, at her home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 this evening at Rumsey-Yost.
Merrell Dean Allen of Lawrence died Saturday January 8 2011 at Brandon Woods at Alvamar aged 87 The funeral home notes a graveside service with military honors at Memorial Park Cemetery at 11 am Wednesday with Pastor Don Ogden officiating Survivors include wife Betty Jeanne Griffith two sons Gary and Tom daughter Cathy and several grandchildren He owned Allen's News and Deans Books and served as an air traffic controller and naval aviator The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses Rehabilitation and Hospice Care
Doris Roever, 89, of Marysville Kansas, died January 7 2011 at Nebraska Heart Institute in Lincoln. Visitation Monday 10 am to 9 pm at Kinsley Mortuary Marysville with friends 4 to 6 pm. Funeral 11 am Tuesday January 11 Zion Lutheran Church Hanover. Survivors include daughters Barb Roever Bonnie Stephenson Susan Meier son Robert Roever six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Doris Roever Memorial Fund established with contributions to Kinsley Mortuary Marysville Kansas.

LiveWell Lawrence awarded 22000 in grants to six projects aimed at healthier eating and increased activity for students. Grants include 4035 to Lawrence Public Schools Food Services for local food standards, 6000 to Central Junior High for garden expansion, 6000 to Free State High for a community vegetable garden, 1500 to Douglas County Housing for a walking school bus, 1500 to Langston Hughes School PTO for mile-at-a-time clubs, and 3000 to The Haskell Foundation for Farm to College programs. LiveWell will match gifts up to 3000. CJHS and FSHS grants require school district approval.
Several private schools are considering expanding grades as districts introduce middle school concepts. Corpus Christi Catholic School will add seventh grade this August and eighth grade in 2012 13, with space repurposed at 6001 Bob Billings Parkway and funded by donations. Bishop Seabury Academy plans to include sixth graders for the first time as part of a broader facility expansion and program changes.
The district braces for 2011 12 cuts on top of 4.6 million approved last spring and over seven million in three years. Board members, led by task force co chair Scott Morgan, seek broad analysis of options from elementary to high schools, including class sizes and program reductions, with a public process to explain decisions.
