Cold weather prompts energy warnings and safety tips
Missouri Gas Energy urged Liberty residents north of Kansas City to lower thermostats as demand could strain the system. Black Hills Energy gave no similar request for Lawrence area customers while advising meters be cleared of snow and ice to avoid heating problems. The state declared a five day suspension of certain hours of service to increase propane deliveries amid freezing temperatures. Roof crews report ice dam issues from heavy snow, stressing the need to clear snow from roof valleys to prevent leaks.

Coalition urges Kansas tax hikes amid mental health cuts
The Kansas Health Care Association leads a coalition saying state budget cuts have pushed the public mental health system to a breaking point. Centers treating 123,000 Kansans yearly report 65 percent grant cuts over three years. Others warn cuts raise nursing home needs and classroom strain. The coalition lists multiple state groups and advocates for funding restored to support vulnerable Kansans.
