Wal Mart plan approved after long local fight

After five and a half years the City Commission quietly approves Wal Mart's second Lawrence store at Sixth and Wakarusa. Officials expect building permits this spring and a 10 to 12 month construction period aiming for an early 2009 opening. Wal Mart spokeswoman Angie Stoner says the project shows long term commitment. The plan faced traffic concerns from neighbors but the Sixth and Wakarusa intersection is viewed as well designed.

Senators propose one more year of school funding lock box

Three Kansas state senators offered schools another year of funding in a plan tied to a $65 million increase.
