The FDA proposes a total ban on DES as a growth stimulant in livestock and in animal feed after detecting DES residues in cattle and sheep livers. Congress may extend the ban to human drug use. the agency will hear requests within 30 days and revoke aging detection methods.
The opening statement begins in the Kansas architectural kickback case against Norbert J. Sidorowicz after a judge overruled a motion to limit allegations. Former Atty. Gen. Vern Miller was expected to testify as the case unfolds in Shawnee County District Court.
A Census Bureau and Agriculture Department report shows 1970 to 1974 farm population fell an average 1.2 percent annually, from 9.7 million workers in 1970 to 9.3 million in 1974, with 1975 preliminary figures at 8.9 million. Blacks and other minorities dropped from 938,000 to 655,000, while retirement benefits and automation, especially in cotton harvesting, help explain shifts.
Six park proposals tied to a $73 000 bequest from the late Myra B Hobbs are under study by East Lawrence groups and the Parks and Recreation Department. Proposals include sites near New York School and 13th and Oregon plus a Brook Creek expansion. a decision is expected within two to three months.
Baldwin police chief George Redman lost his home in a Saturday blaze as he moved into a new Washington Street house. Firefighters contained the flames after about two hours, with ashes sparking small fires. the cause is undetermined though overheating is suspected. The value was about $10,000 with insurance. some antique items and appliances were saved or lost.
The Lawrence Sanitation Department pledges to collect trash in the Indian Hills area today with a special truck, after delays since December 30. An extra truck will also address the Alvamar Hills area today along with the regular route, as the city implements new schedules. A trailer court on East 23rd Street also missed pickups but will be serviced.
Lawrence police seek witnesses to the noon robbery of James Liquor Store at 946 Nl. Vernon James, 49, owner, suffered a fractured skull and superficial gunshot wound. he is in fair condition at Kansas University Medical Center. Witnesses saw a white man flee toward a Buick Electra getaway car with a second possible driver.
In San Clemente California former President Richard M Nixon marks his 63rd birthday with a small dinner for family and close friends at his sea side compound. Julie and David Eisenhower fly in from China with gifts to attend, while Nixon is not expected to attend a separate exhibit unveiling nearby.
Lawrence National Bank and Trust Co introduces the Lawrence National Financial Corp an independent facility at Plaza East Shopping Center East Lawrence. It will offer drive in walk in service and a night depository to aid customers with deposits checks and money orders without bank regulatory approval. Barr explains it as an extended banking facility serving the needs of LNB customers while remaining separate from the bank itself with a mail drop role for deposits.
Clarence Fry of Emporia and Greg Haskell formerly of Americus are held on 100000 bond each in Chase County jail on kidnapping complaints. Kim Crofoot, 21, was abducted from his home and later found bound in a fuel tank after initial demands of 400000 ransom. Crofoot is a former Kansas Livestock Association president and past Kansas Chamber of Commerce director.
