In Saigon area battles, Communist ground fire downed a U S A C 47 nicknamed Puff the Magic Dragon with all seven crewmen killed. A Jamaica Bay dredge sank near My Tho with two civilians dead and one missing as Viet Cong attacked.
The Wire Service Guild and The Associated Press reach a tentative two year contract. members will vote after federal mediators assist, with the current contract extended while tallying results. Wage scales rise, merit pay preserved, and top minimums boost for major city reporters.
Police investigate a knife wound to 18 year old Ronald E Guthrie of 825 N Y Street after a Sunday night argument. The injury was minor. Guthrie was treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital. No complaint was signed against the alleged attacker.
The U S Agency for International Development estimates 1966 thefts and diversions of 22.7 to 27.3 million dollars of American aid commodities in Vietnam. AID notes a 5 to 6 percent loss rate is not unusual for wartime Vietnam. AP reporters earlier documented profiteering and currency speculation costing taxpayers a substantial amount daily.
Washington AP The Supreme Court refused to hear former Rep Eugene J Keogh in a libel suit against the Washington Post 8-0 The case stems from Drew Pearson columns in December 1961 and February 1962 Keogh claimed one column alleged judicial bribery and another that he served special interests Keogh did not seek re election.
Rep. Julian Bond, a 26 year old Atlanta Democrat and noted figure in Vietnam policy debates, took his seat in the Georgia House amid a peaceful ceremony. He was barred previously but the U.S. Supreme Court ruling last December cleared his disqualification.
Nile McAdams of 929 Kg. St. reported the theft of clothes valued at $100 from a clothes line in his back yard Sunday night.
About 800 workers at two Kansas City refineries American Oil Sugar Creek and Phillips Fairfax faced a midnight Sunday strike deadline. The American Oil Co. plant and the Phillips refinery announced tentative contracts with the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union covering about 400 workers, awaiting ratification. Officials said issues are narrowed and operations will continue while remaining concerns are resolved.
Madeline Webb, once jailed for murder in 1942 alongside Eli Shonbrun and John Cullen, is released after more than 24 years. The trio were convicted of killing a wealthy New York widow for a $1,500 ring, with Webb maintaining her innocence. Governor Rockefeller commuted her sentence last December and Webb was discharged an hour early to avoid press.

He was to decide by Thursday whether to grant an adoption order after reviewing reports on Beth four percent old foster parents questioned for age and skin tone.
Gov. William H. Avery voiced satisfaction with his administration and offered best wishes to Gov-elect Robert Docking. He noted Kansas is debt-free, with a record number of employed residents, a strengthened education system, and readiness for an expanded budget and space age needs.
NEW YORK AP Richard M Nixon on the eve of his 54th birthday hints seven years since his 1960 bid. Speculation grows he will run in 1968, with backers arguing his foreign policy experience and congressional ties give him an edge. Nixon says a decision will come in coming months as he plans a Europe tour and a Far East trip next summer.
A father Robert L Wegley 36 and his son Eugene Allen Wegley 10 were killed when a rented Cesna 150 crashed five miles southwest of Lawton Oklahoma. Wegley had just earned a temporary pilot license and was giving his first passenger a flight. The other son and wife awaited at Lawton Municipal Airport. Ray Johnson of Southern Aviation reported Wegley earned his permit yesterday.
The Supreme Court voided a $30,000 damages award to the James J. Hill family from Life magazine article linking their 1952 hostage ordeal to a 1955 play. The 6 to 3 decision held damages require knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard, on First Amendment grounds. Justice Brennan wrote the majority. Justice Fortas dissented.
Lawrence report urges all non citizens to file address cards by January 31 under federal rules. Foreign students and minors must comply with parental or guardian help for under 14.
