Rochester Asylum Fire Kills and Traps Inmates
A catastrophic blaze at the Rochester asylum destroys much of the three story facility. Rescue efforts save many, but estimates place twenty to thirty dead and numerous serious injuries among inmates and nurses. Firefighters battled flames as an explosion toppled walls and cut off escape routes. Ambulances ferried the injured to hospitals while onlookers watched in horror.
