Stellar Magnitudes and Distances From Early Photometric Experiments
The article discusses photometric results showing a sixth magnitude star is one hundredth as bright as a first magnitude star, and infers Alpha Centauri as a typical fourth magnitude star. It argues that Alpha Centauri could be visible at 750 times its distance with Herschel’s telescope and estimates Alpha Centauri’s distance at about 20 billion miles, suggesting stars visible with 20 foot reflectors are at least 15 billion miles away. It notes light travels 186,000 miles per second and contemplates historical implications of star existence over vast timescales. The piece ends with a remark on the country’s business being fair and a proverb about wings and how to use them.
