President Roosevelt announced plans for a series of conferences with business leaders to curb overproduction and glutting markets. He cited High pressure salesmanship as an evil practice to be attacked and noted talks with General Motors president William Knudsen.
Augusta Luzier obtains a divorce in Clathe Kansas from Thomas L Luzier a 74 year old cosmetics manufacturer in Kansas City. The settlement includes 36000 dollars cash and annual alimony of 25000 dollars. Luzier remains second vice president of the cosmetics company.
Frank Carter, 26, and Theodore Thomas, 28, were sentenced to death by electric chair in Marion Arkansas after an 11 white man jury convicted them of attacking a white girl. The verdict came after a one day trial before Circuit Judge Neil Killough with the sentence set for February 8.
The T B clinic will be held all day Monday at Lawrence Memorial hospital with Dr D F Taylor of Norton in charge. Patients should use the west side entrance. The clinic is funded by the annual sale of T B seals.

A 33-year-old man, Charles Davis, leapt three stories to his death in Cincinnati on January 7. He carried a small radio blaring Springtime in the Rockies, an extra-long cord attached to the device, and his body landed on a garage roof where the radio continued to play Home Sweet Home. Pilot Asher Rousch led rescue efforts two miles to the airport. all aboard escaped with minor injuries and were aided by stewardess Veronica Lalley.
Philip King a Princeton great and claimed first paid athletic coach at the university died at Emergency hospital after abdominal operation. He was 65. King earned four years on Walter Camp's All America football team as quarterback and halfback and captained both football and baseball teams before coaching them.
In Hamburg on January 7 a Hanseatic court convicted Arnold Bernstein, head of the Red Star and Arnold Stein Shipping Lines, of treason and violating Germanys foreign exchange laws. He was fined 1,000,000 marks and sentenced to 30 months in prison.
Weather observers report a typhoon moving toward the Philippine islands from a point in the Pacific about 300 miles east of Samar. Heavy rain and wind strike the central Philippines as the storm nears.
Salvatore Ossido was executed at Sing Sing for the March murder of nine year old Einer Sporrer in Brooklyn. The lethal sentence came after a stalked, fatal assault on the child.

Frederick Kruesberg an American citizen serving in China’s airforces was buried in Hankow’s international cemetery with two comrades. He was German born and later naturalized, a resident of Galveston Texas. He crashed north of Hankow as Japanese raids struck the city. he may have been shot down in combat, possibly the first American aviator killed by Japanese in this war. Other instructors and air service personnel also died in the area.
Representative Hoffman accuses Secretary Ickes and Assistant Attorney General Robert H. Jackson of using the same ghost writer for speeches. He cites largely identical excerpts from recent anti monopoly addresses and says the move contributes to unemployment.

Emporia Kansas January 7 two 19 year old youths Kenneth Rake of Emporia and Jerry Getz of Kansas City Kansas face assault with intent to kill charges in a gas pipe attack on 36 year old Mrs Josephine Spencer. She is in critical condition in a local hospital. A statement says they drew lots to decide who would strike first with an 18 inch gas pipe and that they visited Mrs Spencers home for the car of Rakes father who lived there before planning to drive to California.
