Durrant Executed at San Quentin After Proclaiming Innocence

Theodore Durrant was hanged at San Quentin at 10 37 AM after a final speech asserting innocence and forgiving his persecutors. He faced the gallows calmly, received Catholic rites, and died without struggle, his death watched by six officers as crowds gathered outside the prison. Local sentiment split between belief in his guilt and sympathy for a man once seen as devout and respectable who was linked to the murders of Blanche Lamont and Minnie Williams.

Notorious Durrant Case Trial and Executions Recap

A city crowd met Durrant in silence as police prepared for unrest. He was moved to the city jail with armed guards, proclaimed innocence, and faced a lengthy trial beginning July 20 and ending November 1 after nearly 1200 juror examinations. The verdict found him guilty of Lamont’s murder. he was sentenced to hang February 21, 1896. Williams’s murder near Alameda followed, with further court action in January. CATT GUARREL ENDING IN DOUBLE SHOOTING AT CATT CREEK

A Fort Scott Star Special reports Walter Catt shot his wife twice then killed himself near Catt Creek four miles south of town. Mrs Catt was wounded in the shoulder and likely to recover while his self-inflicted wound proved fatal. The couple had hosted guests when jealousy over a whispered talk with her brother in law sparked the tragedy.

ANOTHER FOLEY ARRESTED FOR GAMBLING HALL ROBBERY

Lugarr Mo January 7 Walter Foley eight years old and cousin of Wm Foley was seized at his mother's Missouri home on a December 18 robbery at a Ogden Utah gambling hall. He allegedly drew a pistol at the door but Officer Cave restrained him. Foley, who used the alias Ernest Dowd, was a cowboy and a detective out west.

New York January 7 The Central Cuban relief committee acting under state department directions has issued an appeal for contributions to aid suffering Cubans, about 200000 in danger of death from starvation.
