Washington dispatch reports Congress opening in a tense atmosphere with a looming state of the union address by President Truman. Debates loom on tax cuts foreign aid military training and price controls as Republicans push to limit spending and advance the Marshall plan. Rayburn turns 66 today.
Washington reports the administration scrapped the 17.4 billion cost estimate for long range European aid, while keeping the 6.9 billion figure for the first 18 months. Senator Vandensberg touted the move as easing passage for a four year program, though Republicans like Senator Millikin urged further changes. President Truman approved the decision, with Taft declining comment.
Thirteen people including six children were rescued from an icebound Alaska peninsula wreck near Kodiak. Ten survivors aboard the Spencer were taken to hospital aboard coast guard cutter and navy tug Ma tauco. Three rescuers from Mataco were saved after their small boat overturned during the mission. The rescue followed three days of high winds and heavy seas.
Woestemeyer was re-elected for a second year as chairman of the Pelathe Boy Scout district of the Kaw Council by district committee members at Castle tea room last night. John H. Representatives of the Courlan county soil conservation district the agricultural conservation association and the extension service met yesterday at the ACA office to lay groundwork for drawing up soil conservation plans for 1948. They planned township meetings in February to discuss conservation plans and problems with Homer Gerstenberger Wilson the district agent Deal Siz and George Butett, chairman of the county ACA, present.

Fire of undetermined origin reached waste oil in a grease pit at Randsdell Motor Service, 623 Massachusetts street, filling the building with smoke before the Tire department extinguished the blaze shortly before 8 o'clock this morning. Traffic moved today over the south Basehor Tonganaie link in the proposed super highway from Kansas City to Topeka.
