Douglas County backs sewer districts with no down payment
Douglas County Commission supports creation of two new sewer benefit districts and the expansion of a third without upfront down payments. Petitioners Baldwin Creek No 1 and No 2 and Yankee Tank expansion will be financed by bonds, repaid by landowners with interest, a move intended to maximize participation. Chair Tom Taul and Commissioner Dean Nieder framed the decision as fair ante at the poker table, while Commissioner Mark Buhler abstained due to real estate ties. The board ordered staff to draft the district resolutions for January 11 consideration.

County Route 1061 speed limit lowered to 45 mph
County commissioners agreed to cut the speed limit on County Route 1061 between N 1200 Road and N 1300 Road near Eudora High School from 55 to 45 mph after complaints of speeding. Traffic has risen 22 percent since 1995 and there were five accidents in three years. In unrelated business, Douglas County rejected three payroll and accounting software proposals and called for new bids. Infinitec bid 92737, ADP 10000, Systems Consultants Inc 386923. The committee noted mixed results with Infinitec and that ADP is a service, not software.

City Floods Park to Create Makeshift Ice Rink
City crews began flooding the northern Buford M. Watson Jr. Park area to form a skating rink as cold weather returns. The rink should be ready in a few days once the water freezes into a thick layer, with officials warning skaters to stay off until confirmed safe. The ice could be between one and a half and three inches deep, and several thousand gallons may be used to fill the low-lying park area, located between Tennessee and Kentucky streets south of Sixth.
