Deaf man finds companion in hearing dog Chappy
Ralph Meyer, 75, with severe hearing loss, relies on Chappy a two year old poodle mix trained as a hearing dog. Chappy alerts Meyer to smoke alarms and other noises by leaping to him, providing security and companionship. The program International Hearing Dog has placed 750 dogs nationwide since 1975, training dogs from shelters over six to eight months with owners living alone or with other deaf residents. Meyer, who served in World War II, credits his wife and family for support while awaiting Chappy’s official collar in March.
