Army sergeant linked to Topeka woman's death
In Topeka Kansas police joined Army sergeant Robert Anderson in the death case of Irene Gilbert a 33 year old basket factory worker found beaten stabbed and run over on a street. Anderson reportedly left a tavern with Gilbert then tried to assault her and later clashes with officers resulted in gunfire. Gilbert died from her injuries and Anderson was wounded but survived. no charges were filed. Anderson is stationed at Fort Riley.

Miles W Gates Dies Civic Leader at Home
Miles W Gates prominent funeral director and Rosedale civic figure died unexpectedly at his Johnson county home. Survived by wife Twila Elizabeth Stowers, he helped arrange several funerals after returning from service. His son John Gates, an invalid, was to be initiated into Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of Kansas. Norman McAdoo said initiation may occur at Gates home or at the Lawrence fraternity house. Gates attended Kansas University 1913 to 1918 and was a former SAE member. He suffered from heart disease and multiple ailments leading to his death. The family business, Gates Funeral Home, has led for 80 years. Francis Sport Shop and Acme Cleaners advertise nearby.
