Frieda Jane Culbertson 91 of Lawrence died January 1 2018 at Brandon Woods in Alvamar a private family burial is planned at McLouth Cemetery She was born May 22 1926 near Oskaloosa Kansas to Floyd Herman and Leah Frances Wray She married Ray Lee Culbertson on August 29 1948 and they shared 62 years together He died December 12 2010 Survivors include daughter Susan Pitcher and husband William of Pine Colorado two sons Ron and Jerry Culbertson and wives Opal and others four grandchildren three step grandchildren eight great grandchildren and eight step great grandchildren She was active in Girl Scouts Cub Scouts PTA First Baptist Church Shawnee Mission Hospital volunteer Great Lakes Hospice and other pursuits Memorials may go to Great Lakes Hospice care of Warren McElwain Mortuary Online condolences are posted at warrenmcelwain com.
George William Byers retired University of Kansas entomology professor died January 1 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Born May 16 1923 in Washington DC he served in the Army attaining lieutenant colonel and headed a Korea research unit. He joined KU in 1956 and led the Snow Entomological Museum later named Biodiversity Institute Entomology Division. He chaired the department twice and continued crane fly research until his death.
