Downtown parking garage expansion faces resident protests
At a Tuesday meeting commissioners backed continuing two ordinances to fund the garage next to the Lawrence Public Library. Downtown property owners pay about 430000 of the 915000 cost based on square footage, despite 23 of 194 private properties opposing the assessment. Mayor Amyx remained a critic, voting against the measures.

Downtown garage tax plan faces protests and exemptions
The public process for a downtown benefit district formed in 2012 faced protests over tax assessments for the garage project. The commission kept changes from 2012, exempting churches nonprofits and parking dependent properties, and noted museum exemption would matter for budgets. A separate grocery project near Bor der’s bookstore site aims to add a multistory building with a ground floor market. The Parks and Recreation Sponsorship policy was postponed pending a public hearing for community input.
