De Soto boom from wartime ordnance plant reshaped town
De Soto’s 1940 population of 383 surged as Sunflower Ordnance Works brought 12,000 peak jobs and a flood of workers. The town built a railroad spur, opened Sunflower Village housing, and saw many shops, cafes, and lodging convert for the war effort. Crowded schools, tents and trailers, and tensions with natives marked the period before the plant’s 1946 mothballing and a gradual postwar reelignment.
