Industry analysts shrug off a 3 percent drop in U S auto sales for Dec 11 20, noting mid December volatility and a recovering market. General Motors fell 3 7 percent while Ford rose 1 1 percent and Chrysler gained 2 8 percent.
The Finance Ministry announced price increases for Pemex fuels with Nova up 37.5 percent from 40 to 55 pesos per liter, Extra up 25 percent from 56 to 70 pesos, and diesel up 20 percent from 26 to 31.2 pesos with a further 2.5 percent monthly rise starting February.

Artem Kulikov a 51 year old senior physicist from Leningrad Institute of Nuclear Physics defected while returning from a three month exchange program at Fermilab. He sought asylum at Chicago O’Hare after meeting with State Department officials who described him as a top rank defector in high energy physics.
David Dene Martin, once an evangelist, was put to death in the electric chair at Louisiana State Penitentiary for the Aug. 14, 1977, murders of his wife's lover and three others. He faced four death sentences, claimed life on PCP, and died at 12:16 a.m. as the seventh Louisianan executed since 1976. His tattoo read Love Gloria, naming his unfaithful wife.
Torun Poland AP lieutenant described watching his superior beat Rev Jerzy Popieluszko before abducting and killing him. The officers testified they urged mercy but were ordered to drive toward a dam and dump the priest’s body with rocks bound to his neck. The four officers face possible death penalties if convicted.
