Six gunmen in a Mercedes limousine opened fire in the Dowrah district killing four and wounding several as Christian militiamen chased the attackers. The attack followed a deadly explosion at a Christian militia barracks and undermines Lebanon’s fragile cease fire.
District 497 officials planned a normal day despite light snow as Lecompton crews fixed a broken grader bin. U S motor vehicle output rose 29 percent in 1976 to 11 469 081 units with cars totaling 8 530 419 and trucks 2 938 662. Canadian production increased 14 percent to 1 644 071 units. GM expanded to 57 9 percent of output while Ford fell to 24 percent and Chrysler rose to 15 6 percent.
Linwood and Basehor board members OK a $1 million liability policy with a $1,000 deductible for administrators teachers and staff. The plan replaces a three year policy and follows a closed session on the bid from St Paul Fire and Marine Co and a Kansas City firm. The board also outlines an upcoming meeting to discuss reviving hot lunch service with Heritage Food Service Management.
Douglas County health officials plan a focused nutrition program for pregnant women and infants. The Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department awaits a $108,000 federal grant from the USDA to fund balanced diets for about 300 mothers and babies next year, arriving January. Health director Kay Kent emphasizes it is a health program, not a welfare giveaway, aimed at low income and young mothers.
