Little Katy Survives Early Birth

Katy Gilland of Charlotte born October 19 at Presbyterian Hospital weighing one pound seven ounces. After weeks of tube feeding and careful care she reached five pounds and was sent home with her parents Mr and Mrs David Gilland.

Hebert Warns Delaying Weapons Decision Is Dangerous

Rep. F. Edward Hebert, likely to become House Armed Services chair, warns delaying the decision on undersea missile launchers or the B-1 bomber could be dangerous. Trial Underway In KU Rock Toss Incident

A jury trial began about 10 a.m. in Douglas County District Court for James H Rexrode Jr. 21 of 1105 Ohio in a misdemeanor stemming from a May 6 rock tossing at the Kansas University Military Science building. Four others were arrested in the same case. damages were set at 1925 dollars by KU Physical Plant director Harry Buchholtz.

NYC to Sue Government on Welfare

New York City plans a lawsuit against the state and federal governments over welfare cost funding. Mayor John V. Lindsay says the city bears a disproportionate and arbitrary share of welfare and Medicaid costs, with over 600 million dollars this fiscal year. The suit aims to force funding of locally administered programs by higher levels of government.

Two Missing in Pratt Snowstorm Found Alive

In Pratt Kansas two missing snowstorm victims were located in fair to good condition. Jerry Champion, 32, of Byers, was found in his pickup near midnight after hours of wandering. He said he tried to walk out three times but fell. Mrs. G. E. Dixon, 65, of Stafford, had been missing eight hours. She remained unlocated in the report.

Lawrence school reopening after Christmas break

Haskell Indian Junior College public school and St John’s students returned to classes this morning ending the holidays. Haskell students received two weeks of vacation while District 497 and St John’s were dismissed for 1½ weeks. KU warns Potter Lake ice is not safe and expects two to three more cold nights before thickness allows skating.

Stolen Goods Valued at 900 From Lawrence Apartment

Items valued at 900 were stolen from the apartment of James S. Jacobs and David L. Morgan at 1529 W. Ninth between Dec 23 and 1 p.m. Saturday. A forced entry door was used. Suspect theft included a 260 stereo tuner and amplifier 130 tape recorder 130 turntable two speakers 120 and tapes and albums totaling 260.

Statewide Winter Storm Leaves Dozens Stranded

Three people died as a large snowstorm swept Kansas and Missouri. Concordia and surrounding areas reported nine inches to a foot of snow with 20 to 35 mph winds, closing county roads and stranding motorists. Rain Lifts Lake Levels After Weekend Storms

Rain raised water levels in Lone Star Lake area and Perry Lake near Lawrence with Lone Star up about two feet since the weekend and Perry Lake up 0.27 foot since Dec 31. Severe storms disrupted Kansas but Lawrence remained comparatively spared with highways opening and minimal damage.

Police to Check Taverns for Untaxed 1971 Licenses

Eight Lawrence taverns and clubs without approved 1971 cereal malt beverage licenses will be inspected to ensure no 3.2 beer is sold on site. Assistant City Manager Dennis Kallsen noted the first year requires Jan 1 license submission. prior years saw delays.
