Lawrence property owners must clear snow from public sidewalks within 48 hours after a snowfall ends or face fines. Code enforcement will begin accepting complaints at 8 am today, according to Brian Jimenez, the city's code enforcement manager, with hundreds of properties potentially affected.
To file a complaint about a sidewalk, call 832-7700 after 8 a.m. today or use the city's online system at lawrenceks.org. Inspectors respond to complaints and may cite property owners, not tenants, with a notice of violation. The standard fine is 20 dollars plus 60 dollars in costs, and owners may contest in Lawrence Municipal Court. The ordinance expects owners to clear snow and ice. sand may be used if ice is hard to remove.
An off duty Lawrence police officer Matthew Edward Klock, 29, was killed early Wednesday in a single vehicle crash on Sixth Street near Wakarusa Drive. The Kansas Highway Patrol investigates. Klock, a 2007 hire, was not wearing a seat belt and no alcohol factor is confirmed.
