U S anti aircraft batteries repelled a violent five hour Japanese air raid on Corregidor island near Manila. At least three Japanese planes were shot down and 60 bombers took part. American casualties totaled 13 killed and 35 wounded.
Premier Mussolini told Fascist leaders at a Palazzo Venezia rally to convert Italians into a solid block of will and energy and to increase activity in all fields. He will monitor party work closely and receive reports from leaders in southern Italy and Sicily. Aldo Vidassoni pledged leadership changes were friendly and not halting party organization.
Washington notes the government may seize private autos for war use is possible but unlikely. University of Kansas plans a return to classes Monday at 8 30 after a two and a half week study period. Examinations begin January 22 with finals the week of January 29 and registration for the second semester starts February 2. Many offices reopen as students return to Lawrence and some may delay studies due to war and possible drafts. A navy reserve option remains available to eligible juniors and seniors for summer training and degree completion.

A seven pound son was born today to Capt and Mrs Elliott Roosevelt at Cook Memorial hospital Fort Worth. The boy is the 12th grandchild for President and Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt and the third child for the Elliots. Webb says 30,000 square feet in a downtown building will serve the price administration emergency management OPM contract distribution divisions.
