Kansas team to inspect aquifer amid groundwater warnings

A Geological Survey team will begin annual checks of about 1,400 irrigation wells in western Kansas to track High Plains aquifer levels. Volkswalkers start year with brisk 10k Lawrence walk

The Free State Walkers of Lawrence organized the second annual New Year’s Day 10-kilometer volkswalk starting at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Twenty participants braved single-digit temps to cross the Kansas River and pass Kansas University Memorial Stadium. Notable walkers included JoAnn and Pete Moroz of Lee's Summit who recorded birds along the route and noted 18,600 miles across 1,729 events in 15 years. Peggy Shandy, Clathe, and Mary Lane, Shawnee, completed the trek in about two hours while planners outline year-round walks with guides at the Eldridge Hotel.
