Ice storm coats Lawrence streets on New Year weekend

A Friday night ice storm glazed streets in Lawrence and eastern Kansas with slippery conditions. Meteorologists warned of more frozen precipitation Sunday night into Monday morning as crews worked through the night spreading salt and sand on main roads and neighborhoods. Six ice related accidents reported in Lawrence with no injuries as city and county crews battle the glaze.

Home building on record pace in Lawrence 1992

Lawrence set a city record for single family permits in 1992 with 452 for the year, after 42 issued in December. Total permits across all construction reached 2,041, with a projected valuation of 73.7 million dollars, surpassing prior yearly totals though not the 1988 valuation record.

Baby Bust: LMH births dip in 1992 at Lawrence Memorial

Lawrence Memorial Hospital recorded 848 births in 1992, down almost 100 from 1991, part of a three year Baby Bust linked to aging Boomers and physician turnover. Hospital spokeswoman Janice Early-Weas noted two physicians left in two years and 20 000 diapers were used for newborns. State counts show different totals for Lawrence births. See Baby, page 11A.
