Eastern Seaboard Snowstorm Delays Mummers Parade in Philly

A major snowstorm blanketed the Eastern Seaboard from Missouri to New England. It dropped up to a foot in Maryland Virginia and Washington D C with 11 inches at Dulles Airport and forced the Philadelphia Mummers Parade to be postponed for the eighth time in 71 years. Travel warnings extended from Carolina mountains to southeastern Ohio as coastal South Carolina felt winds near 85 mph.

Plane Unit Withdrawn in Vietnam Reduces U.S. Troops

The 54th Utility Airplane Co. based near Saigon is withdrawn, trimming U.S. strength by 170 troops. The unit flew single engine Otters in the Saigon region and Mekong Delta since 1965 and will be sent back to the United States. In Saigon, two Coast Guard cutters were handed over to South Vietnam, marking a new era for the Vietnamese navy.

Other births followed: a Hill Jr. son at 6:51 a.m. on Iowa Street, a Marshall son at 7:50 a.m. on N.Y., and a Falkenhagen infant at 8:32 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Boggs noted the baby was due in 1970, and celebrations include gifts from local merchants as she focuses on her newborn. Jeffrey Scott King is named as the hospital’s first birth of 1970, in nearby Oskaloosa.

Kansas City Reports Record Homicide Toll in 1970

Kansas City police released 1970 homicide statistics showing 134 deaths, a 1642 per cent rise from previous years. Fifteen beatings, ten stabbings, two strangulations, one balcony fall, and 106 gunshot deaths are recorded. Police report 29 slayings remain unsolved.
