1964 Lawrence Weather Tally: Rainfall Warmth and Tornadoes

The year 1964 in Lawrence featured 45.80 inches of precipitation, far above normal and the eighth wettest since 1868, with six wet months driving the total despite long dry stretches. A mild summer and record highs and lows marked the year, while a devastating tornado outbreak on April 12 damaged farms and buildings across Douglas County.

Teenager Ronald Baker Undergoes Leg Amputation For Cancer

Ronald Baker, a 16 year old from Van Nuys, California, had his left leg amputated at Orthopaedic Hospital after cancer beneath the knee. Surgeons said the operation went well and his condition is good. His mother Lois Eisenbeiss kept vigil with him, joined by his brother in law Robert Buckingham, as doctors emphasized the importance of a familiar face if he wakes.

Water skiers targeted by Viet Cong snipers near Saigon

Vietnamese gunmen fired on U S water skiers on the Saigon River and threw a grenade at a visiting American officer. The water skiers were unharmed. the commander received minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. A riverbank ambush wounded no one else and suspects fled.

Pierce Condition Critical After Mishap Near Sirloin Club

Kansas University public ity director Don Pierce 45 and his wife Vivian 43 were injured in a two car crash on U S 40 near the Sirloin Club. Don Pierce remained in extremely critical condition with a severe head injury at KU Medical Center. Vivian Pierce listed in fair condition with a broken collarbone ribs and a collapsed lung at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

Ex-Resident Killed In New Year’s Eve Wreck

A 20 year old former Lawrence resident Robert Michael Wood of Kansas City was killed when a two car collision occurred near 21st and Naismith shortly before 9 pm on New Year’s Eve. Police report Wood suffered massive internal hemorrhage and a fractured spine. Passenger Louis E. Zieske 20 and David Norman 23 were uninjured. Driver Rhonda Self 20 of 733 N 4th St was not hurt. Self car was southbound on Naismith and the Zieske car was eastbound on 21st St after stopping at a stop sign. Damage to Self car estimated 1200 and Zieske car total loss. Wood was in the front seat and apparently hit the windshield. Police say this was the county’s 11th death of the year and second in Lawrence. Additional minor accidents occurred that night as New Year holiday travel began. police will increase patrols and radar use to curb speed.
