Kansans Cut Debt and Tax Burden Declines
Topeka Kansas January 1 UP Reduction of the public debt by over 10 million dollars and use of the residue from state sales income and cigarette taxes in place of general property taxes will cut the general property tax about eight percent this year. The tax will also bear roughly 12 percent less of the cost of state and local government. In 1944 thirteen counties paid off bonded debt bringing total debt free counties to 38. Ellsworth reports the lowest general property tax rate for county purposes at 1.823 mills. Among cities Coffeyville Belleville Albert and others show low totals for state and local government purposes.

City Treasurer E E Alexander reported Lawrence completed a full year without a bond issue due to war material shortages. The city reduced bonded indebtedness by 74 813 990 bringing total outstanding bonds to 220 071 23. General city bonds dropped to 152 750, internal improvements to 34 321 23, and waterworks to 33 000. Water bonds are slated to be paid by December 1947. Final payments were made on 1934 1925 general and internal issues and water department bonds. Canning sugar receipts show Douglas county residents received 388 970 pounds last year from 13 242 applications, averaging 29 3 pounds per application and 10 pounds per person.
