Nine Children Die in Family Home Fire in Troy

A blaze tore through a three story brick house in Troy killing nine family members. Napoleon Sousie 43 and Lillian 40 are hospitalized with burns along with several other children and a grandchild. Police suspect a kerosene space heater on the second floor as the possible ignition.

Fighting Erupts During Picketing in Ann Arbor

Civil rights demonstration in Ann Arbor in front of City Hall escalated into a fight arresting 13 people including three UM coeds a woman teacher and five juveniles. Police say eight adults were non students and seven were Negroes and whites in the clashes.

Topekans Hospitalized After Two Car Junction Mishap

Mr. and Mrs. William Vest both 65 of Topeka were admitted to St. Francis Hospital after a Baldwin Junction collision involving Ray W. Gillespie 21 of Leavenworth and two passengers from his car. Vest suffered facial lacerations and a broken arm while his wife had scalp cuts and a bruised arm. Courtney Shepard 18 Overland Park and George Pellman 20 Leavenworth had minor injuries. James F. Holland 41 of Lawrence escaped injury in a separate one car crash at 15th and Summit after being blinded by a headlight and driving into a ditch.

Quartet Sings Sunday At Nazarene Church

The Laymen quartet will present sacred music and spirituals at 10 40 a.m. Sunday at the Church of the Nazarene 1942 Mass St. The group includes a college professor a banker a government supervisor and a real estate broker who have appeared as guest soloists on opera oratorio cantata productions and on radio and television including the Ed Sullivan Show.

Faith Needs Aid After 350 Foot Embankment Ordeal

Myrtle Scott 50, a Santa Rosa real estate saleswoman, crawled 350 feet down a timbered embankment after a car rolled in reverse off a hill road near Willits California. She endured broken ribs, a dislocated elbow and a concussion, then crawled to safety while hoping drivers would see her. Three truck drivers found her at dawn and she survived with serious injuries though not critical.

Local Scouter Receives Kaw Council Silver Beaver Award

William Willee of 2101 Owens Lane is among six men honored with the Silver Beaver Award at the Kaw Council appreciation dinner in Kansas City. A 13 year local scouting figure, Willee has served as assistant cubmaster of Pack 3051, then district commissioner, later district commissioner again, and now serves on the Kaw Council executive board. He is a Life Scout from Topeka.

Two Teens Held for Norwalk Murder Case

In Norwalk Connecticut two teens Richard McAlister 18 and Edward McNally 17 were charged with first degree murder in the slaying of classmate John Shinners 18 of Wilton. Police say the pair ambushed Shinners and later buried his body in a wooded area while seeking Shinners car. The investigation linked to the disappearance of McAlister’s father Edwin McAlister, whose body was found last August.

Prof Fox Wins Grant for Cell Division Study

J Eugene Fox assistant professor of botany at Kansas University received a 12144 grant from the Public Health Service to research cell division. The funding supports graduate stipends and laboratory work at the university during the next year.
