Public art shift avoids chicken slaughter plan in Lawrence
Lawrence artist Amber Hansen will change her project The Story of Chickens to comply with city animal cruelty law. Assistant City Attorney Chad Sublet says a public slaughtering event would violate the ordinance prohibiting willful killing of domesticated animals. The piece will proceed in a way that highlights the slaughter process without location on public streets or private property.

Brownback backs pretrial school finance plan
TOPERA Gov Sam Brownback argues changing the school finance formula before the upcoming education funding trial is a sound legal strategy. Opposing attorney John Robb says the move offers no protection and could delay constitutional entitlements for Kansas students. Legislative leaders seek more study after this session, citing doubts about removing local tax limits and the plan's complexity. Brownback cites the June trial and the need to decide before proceedings restrict options. Fulmer adds the plan’s stance to legislators as the policy lead.
