A freight train’s 60th car derailed and collided with an oncoming passenger train near Thompsonstown Pa. Eighteen people were injured as 3 diesel engines, 17 of 18 passenger cars, and 13 freight cars derailed. The railroad cited a burned journal box and axle failure as the cause.
More than 300 Kansas University fraternity and sorority members braved cold, stormy weather to solicit for the Heart Fund on Sunday. Heart Sunday chairman George Ryan praised the volunteers for their expeditious work and dedication. As of now, $4,225 has been raised in Douglas County toward a $7,900 goal.
John Rader a Kansas University graduate and Alaska's first attorney general is a Democratic candidate for governor. The Howard native earned an KU business degree in 1948 and a law degree in 1951 and is 34 years old the youngest in the race. The Raders live in Anchorage with three children.
Lawrence police report 72 traffic accidents over a four day period from Friday to Monday as icy roads and snow affected city streets. Chief Bill Cox calls it one of the worst spells in memory. A monthly morning blood donor session for women will begin at the Red Cross Blood Center in Lawrence Memorial Hospital from 10 to 11:30 a.m. each month, with contact numbers VI 3 5244 or Mrs. Kevin Jones VI 3 3079 for details.
About 1 500 persons attended John Deere Day at Deem's Farm Equipment on East 23rd Street. Farmers and families toured 1962 John Deere farm implements, ate lunch in the showrooms, and watched movies all day. Movies were shown at the Granada theater in the morning and afternoon.

Karen Kay Kimball of Lawrence High School is chosen as a Girls State delegate, with activities in intramurals Nursing Club and pep club. She serves as youth group vice president at St Luke's AME Church and is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. Her sister Martha attended last year.
The Al Kell and Miller Bros Circus will present a two show three ring performance on Saturday June 23 sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce merchants division.
