Kansas lawmakers debate tax bills as a special session winds down. Senate leaders push repeal of intangible tax laws amid calls to limit deliberations and curb tax disputes. House committees advance multiple bills to revise or repeal the statutes, while overall tax relief remains unsettled.
After a 10 minute night session the house adjourned for the first night to await action by its taxation committee. The brief session paused amid anticipation of committee review and possible tax policy measures.
Topeka Feb 28 AP Rep Ben F Endres Republican floor leader said no effort would be made to block a legislative investigation into expenditures from the 40000 gubernatorial law enforcement funds and state highway commission activities He offered to let party gubernatorial candidates Haucke and Bowden explain their tax views on the house floor Endres said he would seek unanimous consent to consider measures probing the funds and highway board actions Governor Clyde Reed said he would support investigations if the legislature desires The resolutions would limit debate and tax related matters while awaiting Friday adjournment The proposal is pending in the senate and no action has been taken by the house.
A set of Kansas bills targeted farm and retail corporations. Rep. Edwards proposes banning general farm operations by corporations with a $1000 penalty. Townsend seeks removal of farm corporations from Kansas for lack of authorization. Blood drafts an intangible tax revision to counter a bank tax suit ruling. House committee backs conforming changes. Townsend also pushes two anti chain store measures requiring stockholder disclosure and restricting in state retail sales by firms with cross ownership. Conkling seeks building a six floor state office near the capitol. Muir introduces higher mortgage and intangible rates.

Washington AP report notes no change in former president William Howard Taft’s condition by 2:20 PM. Friends officials visited the Taft home as a uniformed officer maintained a silent, somber perimeter. Justice Sanford paid final respects as attendants said hope for Taft had been abandoned and death could come at any time.
Matthew Ildan, head of the special committee on public utility construction, told President Hoover that total spending on new construction and expansion for 1930 will exceed 1.4 billion dollars. He said by March 31 electric and street railway works had already accounted for about 800 million, a figure 12 percent higher than early 1929. He noted total 1930 expenditures are projected to rise 1.2 percent over 1929, with electric light and power firms planning 86 million in new work, 465 million of which will go to equipment and materials suppliers and their factories.
Los Angeles authorities launched a fourfold air and ground search covering thirty square miles in the San Bernardino mountains for a transcontinental plane missing since Sunday. The craft piloted by James E. Doles and Albert W. Bieber with steward John W. Slaton disappeared after leaving Kingman Arizona en route to Los Angeles. Witnesses near Lake Arrowhead reported a mountain fire that was quickly doused by a storm. four planes scoured Cajon Pass for clues with no trace found.
George Miller of Paola has purchased the Eldridge Pharmacy from Lawrence D. Hughes and will take possession tomorrow. Hughes said Miller moved his wife and son Mallon to Lawrence and Hughes will re enter the insurance business and make his home in Lawrence. He has owned and operated the pharmacy since it was erected.
The regular tuberculosis clinic will be held all day Monday March 8 at the health department in city hall. Dr F L Loveland of Topeka will supervise. Open house Friday night seven to ten at Hupmobile 808 810 Mass with a carnation for each lady caller.
In district court, the state produced Hilmger Stultz as a surprise prosecution witness in the Carl Young grand larceny trial. Stultz testified about a January 27 incident on the G. B. Shepherd farm near Lawrence, detailing the killing and butchering of a steer and naming Young, Otis Farmer, and Dick Morris as accomplices. Young denied the accusations, claiming no involvement and blaming the blood on others. The trial opened with Sheriff Rutherford recounting the arrest and the discovery of the butchered steer, with defense challenging statements and methods used to obtain them.
Port-Au-Prince Haiti Feb 28 AP The Hoover commission tasked to study the Haiti crisis arrived to orderly crowds but a clash the night before left several injured and thirteen arrested by the garde. A 1500 strong crowd gathered outside the council of State amid rumors of a secret session to reelect Borno or appoint De Jean or Fombrun.
The Izaak Walton League unit formed in Lawrence under Col. Gr Gutkins state director. Rev Alfred D Grey was elected president as a second meeting set for March 13 to elect officers and complete charter. Local efforts aim to expand memberships, promote game conservation and provide public access to recreation places and lakes, benefiting youth and community.
Senator McKellar of Tennessee urged recalling the American delegation from the London naval arms conference in the Senate. He argued there is no possibility of disarmament or armament reduction given the conferees’ mindset. Senator Vandenberg countered, saying the proposal is premature and based on insufficient information.
Mrs Edward Friedman of Tulsa and her one year old daughter died when their truck overturned in a water filled ditch near Holland Bartlett Texas. Two women a man and several children escaped but rescue efforts failed. The couple were traveling to San Antonio where Mr Friedman worked for Western Union.
The AP reports the twelfth death from the North Shoreline passenger train wreck in Kenosha Wisconsin. Harold Carey of Milwaukee died from injuries sustained in the Sunday night collision as cars washed.
Norman Thomas, executive director of the League for Industrial Democracy, spoke at the University of Kansas convocation on Wanted As Social Philosophy for the Present Time. He warned against generic generalizations, critiqued thrift as a sole aim, and urged social insurance and interdependence in a program addressing nationalism, competition, and modern social needs.

Chicago police thwart a bomb plot as a six inch pipe device with a lit fuse was found in a butcher shop doorway. A fatal shooting occurred during a pursuit, with one suspect killed and an officer wounded. The incident caps a high tension crackdown on criminals amid renewed vigilance.
Anthony and nearby Oklahoma officers pressed the murder case of Mrs Ben Turner 55 as her husband offered 1000 reward for the capture of the assailant who choked clubbed and shot her at home in Anthony The killer’s motive remained unknown bloodhounds traced a lead to a deserted garage but yielded little and finger print searches continued amid a wide manhunt conducted by Sheriff J Ryan.
An 18 year old Kansas City youth was arrested north of Lawrence after officers found 45 gallons of liquor in a Ford coupe. Duane Robinson, with no hat or coat, claimed the liquor was from Mitchell Video and destined for Ray Dunbar near Herington on a second trip, earning $35. Police identified him after questioning and discovering the correct name on a hunting license.
Police and fire department members attended a morning lecture at police headquarters by Ned Campbell of the American Red Cross First Aid Service Department. The hour long session covered stretchers placement lifting and carrying injured persons, splinting, stopping bleeding, burns care and resuscitation, highlighting service among officers beyond regular duties. Chief Reinisch and Chief Johns urged continued training to prevent injuries and save lives.
Kansas City reports a robbery at R. Storms store where robber Robert Adcock, 28, a former inmate of the Kansas state penitentiary, was fatally shot by the store owner after demanding 440 dollars from the cash register. Storms fired through the door, hid behind an ice box, and then shot Adcock as he reentered the store. Mrs. Storms was forced to surrender the money.
A mail plane of the Kans division of the national air transport crashed near Overland Park Kansas. The plane was badly damaged but pilot Farlinbekwood Dallas was uninjured. The ship left Kansas City for Dallas and crashed after attempting an emergency landing following in-flight trouble. Cargo of nil hauled to airport. plane replaceable to resume trip.
