Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees agreed to terms on a 1959 contract nearly matching the offer of $65,000 from GM George Weiss. Mantle’s final deal reportedly provides an estimated raise to about $80,000 for the season.
About 39 postal supervisors from eastern Kansas met at the Eldridge Hotel in Lawrence for the first of six two week apart sessions of a development course funded by the Post Office Department. Lawrence postmaster James H. Parsons welcomed attendees. Regional and assistant regional officers Harlan G. Wray and Ernest R. Ausherman led the program with Bert S. Chewning chairing. Attending Lawrence officials included Elmer L. Dougan Murray Smith J. Grant Eichhorn and Wilbur D. Rake.
Stanley Yankus Jr ., 40, of Dowagiac Michigan told a House Agriculture subcommittee that federal controls ruin his egg business and push him to emigrate to Australia. He urged abolishing acreage restrictions but failed to sway the panel. Rep Wint Smith suggested a future removal of surpluses and restrictions.
Mrs. Cora Olive Clay an 81 year old widow was stabbed to death in Coffeyville. Police suspect the same burglar who raided the Colver home last Monday taking about 26 dollars from a coin collection and several dollars plus a wrist watch yesterday. She lived next door and often watched the Colvers television in the afternoon. She apparently surprised the thief.
Darlene Brook, 17, of Route 3, Topeka, was listed as doing very well at St Francis Hospital after a Wednesday evening crash near Perry that left her and Vernon Robb, 17, Williams town, with extensive cuts and bruises. Robb was discharged today. the truck driver remained uninjured.
Iran, preparing to sign a military pact with the United States, reports indicate plans to scrap an old treaty article that allowed Soviet troops to enter Iran. Moscow is expected to react angrily as talks with Washington proceed.
The Kansas League of Municipalities proposed home rule amendment won Senate Judiciary Committee approval. The panel modified the measure to strip cities of the power to regulate their annexation authority, despite broader state support.

In Hagerstown Maryland a man and his wife were found guilty of manslaughter for not seeking medical care for their 5 month old daughter Elaine citing religious beliefs. The infant died November 25 of pneumonia after a 40 minute jury deliberation. The couple Ollen Craig 35 and his wife Lillian faced up to 10 years in prison and were released on $1000 bond pending sentence.
An Army Jupiter missile with a 1500 mile range launched from Cape Canaveral at 12 49 a m after a 64 hour downpour. It marked the 14th Jupiter flight and the rocket is tied to the Army moon probe and other U S space ventures. The latest test carried no payload.
About 40 gallons of gasoline were taken from a Palmyra Township shed west of Baldwin. Sheriff Dale Chappell said the theft probably occurred early Thursday morning. The fuel was in a 55 gallon barrel and hauled away in several five gallon containers.
Rep Gayle Windsor of Little Rock proposes a constitutional amendment to abolish the Legislature and courts and transfer duties to the governor. He says the idea speaks for itself and notes the vogue to flatter Gov Orval Faubus, though he does not name him.

The satire by Al Capp features Daisy Mae Li l Abner Mammy and Pappy Yokum and stars Dean Dittman and Patricia Northrop. Bridge instructor John Weatherwax will teach the Italian bidding method in a 7:30 p.m. Monday class at Lawrence High School under the Adult Education program. The class, opened to the public, charges 50 cents to cover expenses as Haly's team recently regained the world team title, marking the United States fifth straight loss to Europe.
Henry Heffries of 1625 Edgehill Road received a $10 suspended sentence with order to repair a faulty muffler. The disposition followed a police court appearance detailing the vehicle defect and required corrective action.

Kansas Corp Commission member Richard Byrd proposes an investigation into mainline gas sales to industrial users after ads claim Kansas gas would be diverted to distant markets.
